Sparkle and Sass at the SAG Awards

At the Oscar red carpet looms as a fashion event on the swiftly approaching horizon and we have had a chance to see the commentary on the fashion at the Screen Actors' Guild Awards, this is our chance to reflect on the trends, triumphs and little tragedies of red carpet fashion so far this awards season. Whose looks won over all the critics and whose individuality was a step too far?

Two of the big fashion winners of the red carpet at the Sag awards were two of the award winners on the night, Alicia Vikander, who won the award for outstanding performance by a female actor in a supporting role for her work in 'The Danish Girl' and Brie Larsson, who won the award for outstanding performance by a female actor in a lead role for her performance in the breathtaking, 'Room'. It looks like these two are set to continue as the princesses of the 2016 awards season.

Princess dresses, however, were nowhere to be seen. Most opted for bolder and more original looks, some of which worked well and others which, arguably, were not the best choices. Julianne Moore's green dress was perhaps one of the most divisive of the night, its green colour and shape both coming into question for some critics. Nicole Kidman's choice also came in for some criticism, her flouncy, pink and purple number failed to fascinate.

Alicia Vikander wore a striking, sequinned Louis Vuitton dress that looked like a painting by Mondrian or some other modern work of art. The sparkling artwork hugged her figure. Her slicked back hair and simple shoes also added to the efficacy of this sophisticated and stylish look. This was one of many sparkling, sequinned gowns that continued this 2016 catwalk trend.

Brie Larsson's look was very different and yet it too met with plenty of praise. Her lovely, pale-blue Versace gown that featured knots and twists flattered her figure and made her look fantastic. However, her choice of platform high heels brought home to us the obsession with making an actress' legs look longer and perhaps a flat shoe would have been a braver choice with this dress which was, after all, part of a leisure or athletic line on the catwalk.

Simple, figure hugging gowns were the order of the day for many of the women on the red carpet. Eva Longoria's green back and front baring number had many fans, as had Helen Mirren's simple silver gown and Kate Winslet's plain but stylish dress in a beautiful dark green. Greens were seen all over the place, another minor trend to add to the ones for sequins and for simplicity.

With the Oscars just around the corner, fashionistas are waiting, agog, to see how the red carpet trends will continue. Whatever awaits, we can be sure that we are in for yet more sparkle and sass as we reach the pinnacle of the awards season 2016.
