Avoid Skin Cancer With Sun Sunless Tanning Lotion

By Haywood Hunter

Body builders and models used to be the primary people utilizing Sun sunless tanning lotion, but that is changing. Now many people utilize this products so they can have that tanned look at the beach or the gym. Even though these products do fade away, as the epidermis loses dead skin cells, many people prefer this method of getting tan, as dermatologists always recommend people avoid laying out in the sun, or using a sunning bed.

These products color the epidermis, or the most outer layer of the body, without damaging any of the sensitive under layers. Suntans often go into the dermis layer, and can go even deeper depending on how serious a burn one gets. This ages skin over time, and can even result in life-threatening cancerous lesions called melanoma.

The chemical DHA, or dihydroxyacetone, is a chemical sugar which reacts with the outer layer of the epidermis, causing a natural browning of skin cells. This effect fades quickly as skin cells are lost, and the manufacturer recommends that reapplication be done every few days. This not only moisturizes the skin, but it helps to maintain the look of a healthy tan.

Tyrosine-containing pills and sprays are available on the market for use of darkening skin as well. It is supposed to work by increasing the amount of melanin, which then accelerates the process of tanning when one lies in the sun. There is not yet any scientific data which proves that this works but many people still swear by it. With the limited studies performed on these products, potential side effects are not well known.

Canthaxanthin, a chemical used in food dyes, is sometimes utilized as an agent to darken skin. The Food and Drug Administration will not approve the product for this use, however. This particular product carries some pretty serious side effects, and people are warned not to use it.

When taking this internally for the purpose of darkening the skin, canthaxanthin must be taken in doses much higher than would ever be found in food products. It results in an orange-brown color to skin, and may result in canthaxanthin retinopathy, which is a yellowing of the eyes. In addition, this has been connected with some people developing hepatitis infection, which can be a fatal disease.

External bronzers are frequently used by people who wish to have a healthier look to the skin. Spray-on tans are frequently used for body builders and modeling productions, as they are temporary coloring. It might take a couple of days to get rid of it completely, but these products do wash off within a couple of days with simple soap and water.

None of these products, including Sun sunless tanning lotion, are recommended as UVA or UVB protection from the rays of the actual sun. They are intended as means to temporarily color the skin; however, they are not made for the beach. One is advised to wear extra sunscreen when they go out to the beach or the pool.
